Kremsmünster Observatory

The "mathematical tower" of the Kremsmünster abbey was built in 1749-58. The building is 49 meters high and houses a universal museum, including departments on geology, mineralogy, paleontology, botany, zoology, anthropology and arts, topped by the astronomical observatory with two large platforms on the sixth floor, and a chapel, as well as three observatory domes, on the seventh floor. Meteorological observations started in 1762 and contiune to this day, so the Kremsmünster observatory boasts the longest, uninterrupted line of meteorological records, covering nearly 250 years.

In this 30 second exposure (ISO 3200, 13mm, f/4.0), the constellation Orions and the Hyades cluster can be seen above the observatory. This photo is also featured in the TWAN guest gallery. A similar image showing star trails can be seen here.
